Kala Sangam hosts an extraordinary triple bill of contemporary dance as part of 2Faced Dance Company’s The BENCH India and The BENCH UK commissions confirms cultural ties between India and the UK as part of UK-India Year of Culture 2017.
2Faced Dance Company premieres a vivacious and gripping triple bill of contemporary dance at Kala Sangam Arts Centre, Bradford.
This unique one-off programme of work celebrates up and coming female choreographers commissioned as part of 2Faced Dance Company’s The BENCH India and UK programme.
Kicking off the evening is Yashti, a solo piece performed by Palani accompanied by poetry from Andal and Akka Mahadevi and classical Indian music composed by Miguel Marin. At the heart of this work is the ‘woman’ and it is inspired by the story of the Tulasi plant and tales of conflict, confrontation, jealousy, and growth.
In Ronita Mookerji’s work WHO asks: ‘Who am I? What defines me? Where do I belong? I feel this extreme sense of being stuck, confined and imprisoned but what is my true identity? WHO explores what we have lost? What do we come back to? Home, the place where we belong.’ Hailing from Bangalore in India, Mookerji is joined on stage by contemporary dance and performance artist Prashant More.
Using movement and text in It’s Not Over Yet (please note title change, previously Here Before Now) choreographer Emma Jayne Park invites you to share part of her life only those closest to her witnessed. Inspired by Park’s own cancer diagnosis, treatment and remission, It’s Not Over Yet is a journey of remembering, evaluating life choices and exploring why they even matter.
All three dance-makers are recipients of The BENCH commissions. The BENCH, 2Faced Dance’s pioneering training initiative for female choreographers is the brainchild of Tamsin Fitzgerald and developed by the company in response to concerns about the lack of equality within the dance sector.
Join us on Thursday 28th September at 7:30pm for an extraordinary show at Kala Sangam Arts Centre.
